Welcome to Shape UP African – SUPA.
I’m Zee and your chief Shape up African Cheerleader.
Consumption of high-calorie, nutrient-poor foods high in fats and sweeteners is increasing throughout the developing world and especially in Africa. This has resulted in the rapid rise of obesity and diet-related chronic diseases including cancer, stroke and hypertension as well as other obesity-related diseases. Dietary and lifestyle patterns have shifted from a “traditional” to a more “modern” pattern whereby the consumption of fresh foods, fruits and vegetables as well as staples like tubers have been swapped for fast food, sugary drinks and sweets. Also, traditional lifestyle habits like farming, grinding ingredients on a stone or pounding wheat using mortar and pestle have been replaced with more modern, less physically-demanding techniques such as blending and cutting ingredients using electronic kitchen appliances.
Shape Up African – SUPA was created to inform, educate and motivate you to live a healthier lifestyle using not only science-based information but also practical tips from real success stories. Our team of medical doctors, public health researchers, health and wellness coaches as well as certified nutritionists will help you translate scientific knowledge into easily understandable information. We hope that the information you find here will enable you to adopt healthier lifestyle behaviors and eventually live a healthier, longer and happier life.
SUPA is your guide to healthy, science-backed African nutrition. Our recipes & tips encourage the consumption of traditional African foods for a healthier lifestyle.
My Food Philosophy
Eat without depriving yourself of anything, processed and junk food doesn’t count. You must eat food of highest quality, which is real food, and preferably cooked from scratch. Don’t skip any meals, especially breakfast.
Avoid eating processed foods which have no nourishment and are full of bad fats, bad carbohydrates, refined sugar and fake ingredients. Exercise when ever possible and get plenty of sleep.
