Happy new month fam! Hmm, the way time is flying eh! Here we are in May already chai. At this rate, December just might be tomorrow. Anyway here’s what’s cooking this month. We began a new challenge today. Yay! It’s the Keto for African’s challenge you guys. I’m sure most of you have heard about the Keto diet. Basically, it’s a very low carb, low Protein, high fat diet that turns your body into a fat burning machine. Say what?
What is KETO?
I took some time to thoroughly do some research on this diet guy and found lots of scientific evidence that this diet is a life saver since 1920. Originally it aimed to cure epilepsy. The chemistry behind weight loss on the Keto diet it is simple: you omitt starchy carbs from your diet, your body uses up the leftover carbs as fuel. When the carb reservoirs are empty, your body converts fat through the liver into ketones and using this ketones as an alternative source of energy so that you can continue to function.
As the fat reserves are used up, you lose weight. Well the process is more complicated that this. I simplified it so we can get a grasp of what happens. Below is a live video of me explaining the keto diet. Follow me on Facebook for more on keto.
The rule of the game is eat 75% fat, 25% Protein and 5% carbs and completely avoid all starchy carbs and sugar including all food made with sugar. This translate to 80 calories from carbs, 320 calories from Protein and 1200 calories from fat. Basically, you are on a 1600 calorie diet daily! That’s actually reasonable only, you avoid dodo, fufu, puff puff etc. Ha! At first I thought ‘chai diarisGod ooo), but I have realised out of my own experience that fat actually keeps you full. So many have argued that eating that much fat is harmful for the body. Wrong!
There are soo many very recent scientific studies that have proven the contrary. Fat is no longer the enemy. Instead, it becomes are Problem if we consume high Levels of trans fats, starchy carbs and live a sedentary lifestyle. So with all that Information, I created my second e-Book, ‘The 30-day Keto for Africans’ e-Book that Features an overview of the Keto diet, meals plans, Shopping list and recipes for the 30-day challenge. Here is a sneak peek of what it look like.
