We humans always feel that to thrive in any aspect of life, we must be in a perfect environment. We think that everything should be working for us in order to achieve great results. Unfortunately, waiting for the perfect environment keeps us from growing, thriving, being who we know we have the potential to be. So it is with weight loss. Many of you think that if you didn’t lose weight then, when you were highly motivated, had time and money, why would it work now when you’ve got kids to take care of and a full-time job? Here are the top 3 excuses that you make that are keeping you from losing weight:
1. I DON’T HAVE TIME
Time is seemingly the most mentioned barrier to weight loss. Some of the most frequent responses I get from clients are:
“I am very busy with the kids and running the house so I hardly have time for myself.”
“I have a full-time job, so I don’t have time to exercise”
Can I be honest with you guys for a moment? There is time in your day. We’ve got 24 hours at our disposal to do ALL the things that we want to do and the key word is WANT. Even if you have children – I’m got two myself, or are going to school and working 2 jobs to pay your bills, you still can make time. So how is it possible to make time? Well we make time for the things that we WANT to do don’t we?
Time is NOT a barrier to weight loss!
Think about this for a moment, if you’re planning to go to a party at the end of the week, what do you do? You make time to go buy a dress, a shoe, do your hair and your nails. You’ll spend the whole day at the shopping center until you get that outfit so you can look fabulous. I know this first hand because I did that all the time. We stay out late for parties, but we can’t wake up at 6 am for a 30 minute cardio exercise because it is too early? We have all the tools we need to live healthy but we just won’t stop making excuses.
2. I DON’T HAVE MONEY
Not only do we blame our unhealthy lifestyle on time, we also blame it on our budget. Many people say to eat healthy, you need money. Admittedly, some (healthy) foods are more expensive than others. But a healthy lifestyle is by no means an expensive lifestyle. You can live healthy even on a budget, if you apply some tricks and leave out the excessive consumption of meat, beer and cigarette among other things (post for another day). If you plan your meals ahead of time, you’ll make the most of your money and meals.
It’s not about the money but about how you spend your money.
The real problem is, you spend unnecessarily on processed and fast foods which neither satisfy nor nourish your body. You forget that you can’t continue eating chicken wings, chips, chocolate and all that junk food and lose weight. You can’t continue being a couch potato an expect to lose weight.
3. I HAVE BAD GENES
Most people who use the “bad gene excuse” have this to say about their weight problem: “There some of us who, despite doing almost everything right, are destined to be fat, no matter how healthy we eat and how much physical activity we do, we will never lose weight, all thanks to our genes.”
It is true that genetics1 may explain the reason why some people gain or lose weight faster than others. Though losing weight is difficult for many people with a genetic predisposition to store fat, body weight still reflects the balance between the amount of energy consumed and the amount the body uses. Therefore, even if you have a genetic predisposition to lose weight slower than others, your body’s metabolism can change if you adopt a healthy lifestyle of eating whole unprocessed foods in their right portions and altering your exercise habits. You may not lose weight as fast as your girlfriend, but fact is you will lose the weight if you eat right, exercise properly, sleep well and eliminate stressors and other factors that contribute to weight gain.
You don’t have bad genes, you have bad habits!
Excuses are the reasons why you don’t attain many of your goals. Excuses hinder progress. They are a barrier to any kind of healthy, good-for-you decision you want to make. Making excuses for our habits or lifestyle, is like building a wall and blocking our very own progress. If you keep telling yourself that you can’t lose weight untill you have money to register at a gym, you actually stop yourself from using alternative methods of losing weight like going for a power walk around your area or sweating to the beat of some good music. If you say you cannot lose weight until the right time (when you are done with child-bearing), then you may have to wait for the next 5 – 10 years and that’s a looooong time. Think about the huge benefit little changes in diet and physical activity could bring in 5 years!
Decide and Commit
Stop making excuses for your unhealthy behavior. You need to check yourself and figure out the root of the problem. If the blame for not eating right is on your low-budget, well cut off the junk food, cut off on the Brazilian hair and the J’adore Dior and start including fruits, vegetables, lean meat and fish, complex carbs, tubers, grains and water! Brazilian extensions and the perfume will only decorated the box but fruits, vegetables and fish will provide you with the nutrients you need to keep you healthy on the inside and glowing on the outside. No more excuses. Start living the healthy life you should be living now and do it for you! Because you deserve it!
