As I sit here in excitement about our weight loss challenge which begins today, there is this voice of doubt that keeps yelling in mind,
“Are you sure you will make it 30 days without carbs?”
“Remember how sweet puff-puff is with akamu/pap/fermented cornmeal?”
“How about that pepperish goat meat with fried dodo?”
“You really want to give up on all of that good stuff?”
Can you relate?
Have you noticed that anytime you take up a challenge, anytime you make up your mind to finally follow your heart and do something you’ve always wanted to do and never got the chance of doing or started and didn’t complete for whatever reason, there is this voice that wants to stop you in your tracks, towards the path of achievement and success.
It may be starting a weight loss challenge like the one my friends and I began today, it may be beginning a new career or launching a business or even taking back control of your life after a period of hurt or pain. Most often, there is a voice that wants to hold you hostage in your present situation. And that voice may be a gently whisper coming from a place of failure and self-accusation in our past, it may be the voice of accusation coming from a place of or it may be the voice(s) of (a) friend(s) or someone in your entourage to talk us into self-doubt. And eventually, create an addiction to anxiety and promotes insecurity.
When doubt has a grasp on you, the following can follow;
You will lose focus
Doubt will rob you of seeing the value in what you have set yourself out to do. And once you lose value, you lose focus and whatever it is you had previously set your mind on will be of no importance, or at least, it is no longer a priority.
You will waste time and energy
Doubt will steal your time and consume your energy. Imagine spending endless hours thinking of how and why you cannot stick to your weight loss goals. This is the valuable time you could have used preparing for success, planning meal plans and prepping meals. Doubt is a time and energy thief. You better believe it!
You will be insecure
When doubt creeps in, you begin to feel like you cannot do what you set yourself to do and you are not able to achieve anything you set yourself at. Your self-esteem reduces and then you lack confidence in yourself.
Wolfgang Goethe once said
“Doubt can only be removed by action”
And Goethe is definitely right. If not confronted, controlled and dealt with, the voice of doubt can lead to even more serious problems that can ruin your life. So here are a few ways you can take action to remove or erase doubt;
Speak back with words of truth
There is power in truth. There is power in words. The words you speak have the power to crush every voice of doubt coming your way. It doesn’t matter if these voices are from your past or from someone in your present. Speak back and speak these truths.
“I can do ALL these through Christ who strengthens me”
“I can and I will”
“I am able to do what I put my heart to”
“I have the power to overcome”
You may not be able to control what comes to your mind, or what people say to you. But you are able to select what your response will be. You hold the power to speak words of truth over your life and this, in turn, has the power to silence ANY voice of doubt.
Sometimes speaking to yourself may not be sufficient especially if the voice of doubt is coming from persons surrounding you. You need to confront their voice of doubt over your life. If something is telling you that you cannot lose weight, or you cannot reach a specific goal because of one reason or the other, I encourage you to confront them. Ask them questions like
“Why do you think so?”
“Where do you have your facts from?”
When you ask questions, you have the tendency of finding answers which will bring knowledge and wisdom and help wipe away doubt.
Stay focused, stay on perspective
In his fable ‘the Noticer’, Andy Andrew wrote;
“In desperate times, much more than anything else, folks need perspective. For perspective brings calm. Calm leads to clear thinking. Clear thinking yields new ideas. And ideas produce the bloom…of an answer.”
I have realized that the voice of doubt is also the voice of distraction trying to take your focus off that which will better you to that which will not prosper you. That is why focus and perspective are of great importance to erase doubt. Think about how what you want to achieve will benefit you. Focus on the impact of wholesome and healthy food on your wellbeing. This will give you a reason to hold on and keep fighting.
Actions always speak louder than words. Whatever it is that the voice of doubt is saying to you, take quick action towards realizing your goal. Once you begin to act, once you beginning taking baby steps to develop a healthy habit, to lose weight, to build your business, you will begin to see results and results will silence the voice(s) of doubt for good.
Doubt is the anchor that keeps us from reaching higher heights. If you are in a place of self-doubt right now, don’t stay there! Open up to someone who cares about you and reach out for help. Remember, a problem shared, is a problem half solved.
I am curious, is there something you want to achieve or a goal you want to reach but you seem to be in the same spot because of doubt? Could you share with me? Or have you conquered the voice of doubt in some area of your life? What strategies did you use? How has your life changed as a result. Your feedback might help someone in the same situation.
