I remember how my grandma (sleep well sweet mother) prayed the stations of the cross as she wept. To her, it was heartbreaking and devastating how Jesus was betrayed, humiliated and killed like a criminal. I was about 8 years old at the time and I really thought her emotions were exaggerated and well, kinda hilarious. I didn’t understand why someone would weep over a man who didn’t even exist, so I thought at that time! Another question to me was why would a man whom grandma said was so perfect, sin-free and so kind, be treated this way? And if He was God, why didn’t He do something about this betrayal and humiliation? Why did He accept to go to the cross, be mistreated and die in such a shameful way? What does Christ suffering mean to us? Fast forward some 20 years later, I realized by the Grace of God what selfless, limitless and unconditional love Jesus demonstrated on that cross on the pathway to victory.
Day 1: Betrayal, Humiliation & Suffering
To cut a long story short, they led Jesus to be crucified and beat his back until the blood ran freely. They pushed a crown of thorns into his head, slapping, spitting on and mocking at him. The weakened Jesus carried his heavy cross. Next, the soldiers threw Jesus down on the splintered wood and pounded the nails into his hands and feet, they dropped the cross into the ground and Jesus hung there for hours as the life slowly dripped out of Him. He was rejected, insulted and spat on, humiliated, accused falsely and was denied justice. Yet, He embraced this punishment for your sake and mine (see Matthew 27:32 -56).
You might be on day 1 in your life’s circumstances right now.
Have you been betrayed, rejected, humiliated, insulted, spat on?
Have life’s circumstances left you hurting, hungry, lonely, afraid, abandoned, powerless, beaten and broke?
Have you been accused falsely or been denied justice?
Know that you are not alone. Christ knows exactly how you feel and what you are going through. He has been there! It wasn’t the nails that held Him to that cross, but His love for you. He died to turn your situation around! How’s that for a start? Amazing right? Check out day two.
Remember, God loves YOU abundantly.
